This movie is based on Alex Garland's
novel. It centers on a young nicotine addicted traveler named Richard (DiCaprio),
an avid pop culture buff with a particular love for video games and Vietnam
War movies. While at a hotel in Bangkok, he finds a map left by his strange,
whacked out neighbor, who just committed suicide. The neighbor had told
Richard an improbable tale of a secret island, a paradise on earth: the
perfect beach, unsullied by tourists.
Richard, and two people he just meet, risk
their lives swimming across an open sea from another island to the island
on the map. The beach is there, but looks are not everything, it may not
be paradise on earth.
